Seeing the Apex shirt that first time, my initial thought was, "Wow, itty bitty chest plate. Good!" I tested a size 42 even though that is one size smaller than I measure. But the shirt went on easily enough; the ample cut in the sleeve opening allowed the shirt to slip right over my forearms without shirt slippers or a struggle. (I had to stretch the sleeves of my last two single ply shirts to be able to wear them.) The fit through the torso is snug, but not constricting, and the broad scoop of the neck permits it to ride higher on the lighter attempts without choking me out.
Structurally the Apex shirt is very sound. The neck is stout for a single ply, and the radical cut sleeves are well reinforced from the top of the shoulder all the way back to the triceps seam. I like the wraparound fit through the delt area. As I mentioned, the sleeve opening is not tight, but the fit under the arm back to the triceps is, and I have the bite marks to prove it! The stretchy back makes repositioning the shirt easier, and lets you dig into the bench with your back.
I first tested the Apex on February 2, 2009, two weeks after my last meet, and I confess I hadn't touched a heavy weight in that stretch of time. The plan was to work up to about a opener weight, if I could. The set of the sleeve is a bit more radical than anything I've ever used, so it required help from my lift off man to get both hands on the bar. But once I had the weight in my hands, the groove felt very natural and has some wiggle room in it. I took a light triple to about a 2-board distance, then went up 40 lbs. and got that to within a board on a second rep. My third attempt was a single just 5 lbs. less than I opened with last meet, and that almost touched. So, it was going to take 50 lbs. more to touch in the Apex than my other single ply shirts. Nice! My last attempt I did get to touch, and got very good pop off the chest. That attempt was 15 lbs. over my meet opener two weeks earlier. This was accomplished without belting or jacking the shirt down, no twisting the sleeves, nothing, just a solid lift from the Apex shirt right out of the bag.
