The Thomas Inch Dumbbell
To Date: "Big Tony" Scrivens, Steve Gardener, Mark Henry and Joel Sward
have lifted the Thomas Inch Dumbbell

Pro Strongman "Big Tony" Scrivens
This awesome dumbbell weight 173 pounds &
the handle is 2.5" thick and only a few people can actually pick it up.

There is also the Millenium Dumbbell that weights over 200 lbs.
As far as APT knows, nobody has picked this one up yet.

Here is a little History on the "Thomas Inch Dumbbell"
During the first half of this century from about 1910 until the early 1940's there was a professional strongman by the name of Thomas Inch who conducted stage shows of strength in Great Britain and Europe. He was known for his enormous grip strength and included in his show was the famous "Challenge Dumbbell". Inch offered almost $1000 (200 British Pounds) to anyone who could lift the dumbbell off the floor with one hand. At the conclusion of each show, Inch would lift the dumbbell to show it could be done. While the dumbbell weighted 173 lbs, the handle is 2.5" thick which makes it very difficult to grip.

During those years no one else succeeded in lifting the barbbell and on Mr. Inch's death the barbbell finally passed into the hands of the British professional strongman David Prowse (the Darth Vader in Star Wars films). On special occasions it has been brought out for lifting attempts. Since Thomas Inch's death the Barbbell has been lifted by some 7 or 8 men.

While there is a copy of the Inch Dumbbell in Australia, there was no way for anyone to try and lift the famous "Challenge Dumbbell". Recently a foundry in the United States has made an exact copy and offers it for sale through two distributors, one on the West Coast and one on the East Coast. The new dumbbell has been lifted by several men recently and perhaps you can too!
